Phoenix Racing is an organization at Olin College of Engineering that embodies this spirit of creativity. We are currently creating a vehicle to compete in the SAE Baja East Competition held in Alabama in April. We will design this vehicle from scratch, starting with sketches and a CAD model and ultimately fabricating the competition vehicle. The design of the vehicle is absolutely critical, as all vehicles are required to use the same engine. Therefore, SAE Baja comes down to the chassis, drive-train, suspension, steering and driver interface, electronic components, and weight. We are excited about this challenge, and look forward to combining our skill-sets and engineering education to produce the best vehicle we can. Read more >>
Okay, I know--this blog post is more than a week late. But the story needs to be told, so here it is, picking up where I left off--
On dynamic events day, we passed tech inspection and brake testing early in the morning, as expected. We moved on to the traction event, where we had to tow a BMW X6 (see the image galleries). We saw that the location of the tow hitch was very important in this event, and because of a pretty good hitch point on our vehicle, we ended up having the 25th fastest time in this event. Today was static events day at competition. We went through engine check in the morning and then quickly proceeded to design evaluations. These were a bit classier than last year, as they took place in a Clemson University lab facility instead of a large tent. The design judges seemed particularly impressed by our tachometer and speedometer system--props to our electrical subteam! Read more >>
Each year all Baja SAE teams must write a Design Report which details the objectives and rationale for the engineering and design decisions made in completion of their vehicle.
This year, Phoenix Racing received a score of 69.50 points on our report placing our team tied for 10th place out of 100 teams.
Congratulations to everyone that helped on the report and with the designs! Such a high ranking really speaks to our team's ability to both make sound design decisions and explain those in a techinical document.
Johannes and I walked through the suspension, maneuverability, and endurance track just a couple hours ago. We noticed a few things about the tracks and I have a few thoughts on how they compare to last year's tracks at Alabama. Read more >>
